Packaging at full power! Italian packaging production grows in 2019, glass is the main player

27/10/2020

With an increase of 2.2% in volume and a value of 16.9 million tons, industrial packaging production in Italy in 2019 recorded a positive result according to the analysis carried out by UCIMA – Unione Costruttori Italiani Macchine per il Confezionamento e l’Imballaggio – study centre. Turnover was also good and – with 34,000 million Euros – recorded an increase of 2.4% compared to 2018 (Istituto Italiano Imballaggio data). There was also a positive sign for imports (17.2% of total production) which reached 2.9 million tonnes (+2.2%) and exports which reached 2 million tonnes (+4.2%) compared to 2018.

Rankings of format and materials

The increase was also seen in the packaging supply chains, which saw a growth in production compared to the previous year. With the best results in the ranking, we find glass (+4.8%), flexible converter packaging (+3.1%) and plastics (+2.6%).

Followed by paper and board packaging (+1%), steel (+0.3%), and wood (+0.1%). Rigid composite-material containers are stable. On the other hand, aluminium production volumes decreased (-5.5%) compared to the previous year. Turnover from the various supply chains also increased, with particularly positive results for glass (+8%) and aluminium (+6%).

Etipack solutions supporting the trend

The first supply chain in the ranking is also the one that most involves Etipack: glass is in fact the leading player in most of the products labelled and processed by our customers thanks to our solutions. In fact, the products mainly made of glass, plastic and flexible, are pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food and beverage, which also are the supply chains that we serve with several labelling and product handling systems.
